Why Choose a Chiller System?

When commercial buildings grow in size, traditional air conditioning becomes inefficient. That’s where chillers come in. These large-scale systems provide a cost-effective and reliable solution for cooling large premises like office towers, shopping centres, hotels, and hospitals.

What is a Chiller?

A chiller is a centralised cooling system that produces chilled water to regulate indoor temperature. Unlike standard split systems, chillers are designed for scale. They extract unwanted heat from the building and release it into the atmosphere, helping to keep occupants comfortable and equipment operating safely.

Buildings naturally accumulate heat from:

  • Sun exposure (solar gain)

  • Occupants and their activities

  • Equipment like lighting, computers, and machinery

This heat must be efficiently removed to maintain comfort and protect sensitive electronics.

Types of Chillers: Air-Cooled vs Water-Cooled

Chillers are typically installed in either the basement or on the roof:

  • Air-Cooled Chillers (usually rooftop): Use fans to disperse heat into the air, similar to standard A/C units.

  • Water-Cooled Chillers (usually basement): Use cooling towers to release heat via water circulation.

Both types use refrigerant gas to transfer heat from the building to the outside environment.

How Chillers Work

  1. Chilled Water Generation
The evaporator produces chilled water, which circulates through the building to absorb heat.

  2. Heat Transfer
The warm water returns to the evaporator. Refrigerant gas absorbs this heat and carries it to the condenser.

  3. Heat Rejection
    The condenser expels the heat:

    • Air-cooled systems: Use fans (like blowing on a hot spoon of soup)

    • Water-cooled systems: Use pumps and cooling towers to release heat into the air
